Noodle Relay (A modified version of Daruma Hakobi)

Teams of two must carry a noodle (K & 1st) or two noodles (2nd – 5th) on top of a hula-hoop, and bring it to the other side without dropping it on the ground. Half of the class will be on one side of the field, and the other half will be waiting on the other side of the field.

Team Ball in Basket (Tamaire)

When the whistle is blown, the students all try to throw as many of their teams’ balls into the baskets as possible.  They may pick up the missed balls as many times as they like. After a one minute time period, the whistle is blown again, and all the students sit down. The baskets are then lowered, and the balls inside the buckets are counted to see which team made the most in the buckets.  Parents will get to have a turn, too! 

Re-lei Relay（A modified version of Karimono Kyousou）

This is a regular relay race except pairs of students grab an accessory or hand holding object, such as a lei, sunglasses, or umbrella, hand it to their teacher, who will be in the middle of the line, and then the students run back to the starting  line. Then, the next pair will grab an item, hand it to their teacher, run back, and so  forth and so forth. At the end of the relay, a photo of the teachers will be taken to showcase how well the students “accessorized” their teachers. 

What is Undoukai?

Undoukai (Sports Day) is a major school wide event for most elementary schools in Japan. Students participate in a variety of activities as a full day event.   Some activities are competitive such as relay races and tamaire (ball in bucket), but there are also many other activities to teach children how to work together and cheering on their teammates. Many classes do dance or gymnastics as well. On the day of Undoukai, children are usually divided into two teams (usually red and white).

Undoukai is a fun day for the entire family. Many schools hold Undoukai on Sundays so that there will be more family members who can come and watch this exciting event.   There are some activities for family members. During lunchtime, families usually picnic together out on the field. Many people get up early to secure good seats and to make elaborate bento (boxed lunches).

how can i help?

This event is made possible by the parent volunteers. We need people who can help the classroom teachers by chaperoning the students and also volunteers who will be able to take photographs for the families who will not be able to come to Undoukai.

This year, we are resuming our tradition of treating volunteers to an “Appreciation Lunch,” and will be inviting volunteers to the Teachers’ Lounge and some outdoor picnic tables for a delicious buffet!
