SFUSD Curriculum

Common Core

Preparing our young people for the world of tomorrow means equipping them today with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in their future. To do that, we need to make sure our goals for learning are consistent with the goals for learning across the nation—and that’s really all Common Core Standards are. They are a set of learning goals that work grade-by-grade, step-by-step toward what modern careers and colleges expect, so that when students graduate, they are ready for college, ready for work—ready for life.

The Clarendon JBBP curriculum meets and exceed the requirements established by the state of California and SFUSD in language arts, math, science, social studies, physical education, art, music and multicultural studies. Japanese-speaking children benefit from assistance in their native language as they master English skills. English-speaking children benefit from exposure to Japanese reading, writing, and conversation. Japanese art and music activities enliven the lessons in our program.

social emotional learning

Clarendon (JBBP and Second Community) is implementing a school-wide Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) plan for the 2019-20 school year. Our SEL plan reflects the latest research that shows that a strong social-emotional foundation is necessary for all students for school success, academic achievement, positive social relationships and the development of emotional competence. We also believe that SEL can be a lever for advancing educational equity.

Our SEL plan includes: bi-monthly SEL themes; SEL curriculum in all classrooms; increasing PBIS and positive-based supports in classes and on the yard, parent communication, and Parent Education Nights. Five SEL themes will guide the Clarendon community throughout the year: Learning School Expectations; Identifying Feelings; Having Empathy; Managing Emotions; and Problem Solving.

Each teacher will use their preferred SEL curriculum, and fit their lessons into the theme. The students will receive lessons in class, but will also access information during lunch-time assemblies and on the yard. Parents will also receive information about the monthly theme, and how to echo the learning at home through Parent Education Nights and our SEL website. Students are positively acknowledged for using their social skills to help to create a safe learning environment. Learn more on our SEL Website.
